PRACTICE QUESTIONS

What is the practice schedule?

Practices are offered weekday morning outdoors at Crafton Pool.

  • Swimmers 10 and under will practice from 9:00-10:00 a.m.
  • Swimmers 11 and up will practice from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Daily practice is recommended. The more you practice, the stronger you and our team will be. We do ask that you provide coaches with advance notice when you'll be absent from practice.

We have a vacation planned, can we still participate?

Yes! Many families have varying availability throughout the summer. There are no strict attendance requirements; you'll just need to let the coaches know when your swimmers will miss practice and/or meets. (Please note that swimmers must attend at least two meets to be eligible to participate in All Stars and Champs.)

Is practice cancelled when there's inclement weather?

We will notify you via email and Facebook if we need to cancel practice. In case of thunderstorms, we cannot safely conduct practice. If the temperature is exceptionally cool (60 degrees or under), swimmers should wear tennis shoes and dress appropriately for a dry land practice.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

Are there volunteer requirements for families?

Yes, Crafton Crocodiles is a volunteer-run organization. Our team can only be successful if each family contributes their fair share. Hosting swim meets is an enormous effort and requires that families perform a variety of roles. As such, we require that each family agrees to support the team in some capacity by:

  • Volunteering at swim meets in assigned roles.
  • Assisting with team events (e.g. Fun Days, Banquet).
  • Participating in fundraising efforts and/or donating concession items.

We expect families to contribute at least three (3) times per season.

What jobs need to be filled during swim meets?

Hosting swim meets is an enormous effort and requires that families perform a variety of roles, including:

  • Timers – Use a stopwatch/app to record each swimmer’s time in your lane.
  • Finish Judges – Observe the order swimmers finish the race and record placement to help confirm results.
  • Stroke/Turn Judge – Watch swimmers to ensure they follow proper stroke and turn rules for each event.
  • Head Timer – Oversees all lane timers, serves as a back-up timer, distributes timing sheets, and checks that times are recorded correctly.
  • Starter – Signals the start of each race using the starting device and ensures swimmers begin fairly and safely.
  • Announcer / Emcee – Announces events, heats, and other important information over the sound system and keeps the meet running smoothly and on schedule.
  • Concessions (Food Servers, Cashiers) – Prepare and sell food and drinks, handle money, and keep the concession area stocked and organized.
  • Seeders – Lines up swimmers into order of events, heats and lanes.
  • Meet Marshall – Maintains order on deck and ensures only authorized personnel are in restricted areas.
  • Runner – Collects completed timing and place sheets and delivers them promptly to the scoring table.
  • Heat Winner Ribbons – Distribute heat winner ribbons to swimmers after each race.
  • Ribbons / Medals – Prepare and organize award ribbons and medals for distribution at the end of the meet.
Do I need experience to volunteer?

Only a few jobs require prior experience. See a board member for more information about the available jobs, and we can help train you beforehand.

What happens if our family doesn't fulfill the volunteer requirements?

Failure to meet volunteer obligations may result in additional fees or loss of team privileges as determined by the Executive Board.

SWIM MEET QUESTIONS

What should we expect at a swim meet?

Swim meets are a ton of fun, but the first meet can feel overwhelming to both swimmers and their families. Don't worry - there are lots of helpers to guide you every step of the way! Swim meets are organized by "events" based on age group and stroke (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). There are both individual events and relays comprised of 4 swimmers per team. Parents and families watch from the spectator area and are encouraged to cheer for all swimmers.

How long does a swim meet last?

Meets typically last 2–3 hours, but this can vary depending on the number of swimmers and events.

How can I keep track of the races and results?

To help families keep track of races and results, we use the free Swimmingly Fan app. With the app, you can:

  • See when your swimmer’s events are coming up
  • Get notifications when your swimmer is about to race
  • View heat assignments and lane numbers
  • Check results and times as soon as they’re posted

This makes it much easier to know where your swimmer needs to be and when, especially during busy meets.

Does my swimmer have to stay for the whole meet?

Swimmers can leave once all of their events are completed, but many choose to stay until the end of the meet to cheer on their teammates.

How many events will my child swim?

It depends on how many swimmers are participating in the meet, but swimmers are limited to 2 individual events and 1 relay.

What should we bring?

Swimmers should bring:

  • Team suit and cap
  • Goggles (plus an extra pair, if possible)
  • Towels
  • Book/games/toys to pass the time between races

Spectators should bring:

  • Camp chair and/or blanket (pool deck access is limited to swimmers, coaches and authorized volunteers ONLY).
  • Sunscreen (there's limited shade at all the pools)

Will food be available at the meets?

Yes, concessions will be available for purchase during the meets (cash, card or mobile payment depending on the location). Families are also welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks.
